Workshops

Interested in working with us or finding out how on earth we make our work? Find out at a practical theatre workshop with Kilter.

We offer a series of hands-on practical theatre workshops. If you’d like to arrange for us to visit you, please get in touch with Olly to discuss prices and how we can tailor the workshop to meet your requirements.

Workshops are normally three hours, involving a practical session with one or two experienced Kilter Theatre makers. The following shows some of the areas we can cover for students, although we are also happy to respond to a particular brief within our field.

1.  Dealing with Sensitive Issues like Climate Change (without terrifying/boring your audience). Kilter is regularly praised by audiences for invigorating a can-do attitude to sometimes seemingly overwhelming topics. In this workshop students will be encouraged to think about new ways to communicate what is important to them.

2.  How can my Performing Arts Vocation Create Positive Change? Kilter is an industry-leader on low-carbon theatre practise. We ‘walk our talk’ and we’d like to share our methodologies with a new generation of theatre-makers. We’ve made the mistakes so you don’t have to!

3.  Site-specific & site-responsive character development & story-telling. Much of Kilter’s performance work is ingrained in the site in which we are performing.  In this workshop students are encouraged to understand everything a site has to offer and translate that into character and narrative.

4.  Up-close and interactive performance techniques. Kilter has refined a number of strategies for working with audiences in confined or otherwise awkward performance spaces.  Dubbed ‘theatre at point-blank range’, these techniques avoid the sometimes unnecessarily uncomfortable nature of interactive theatre.

5.  Making Work in the Real World. Kilter’s practitioners have at least 10 years’ experience of making work with small companies in the real world (as opposed to the protected environment of university etc).  We have a wealth of knowledge, tips and processes to make sure that students become active and pro-active, employed and happy theatre-makers.

Prices range from £200 to £500 per session depending on your group size and requirements. (Sometimes people find room in their sustainability budget not drama!)

TESTIMONIES

“We have worked with Olly a number of times over the past few years both as a theatre maker, an actor and a facilitator. He’s quite unique. He has this vast body of knowledge surrounding the environment, ecologies and sustainable living, alongside the requisite theatre making skills to turn this knowledge into something entertaining, heart warming and provocative (yet non-preachy). He can write and conceptualise: and he is a fine comedy performer and dance/physical theatre artist to boot as well as having a natural way of imparting his knowledge and skills to younger people.” Kate Cross, Artistic Director, the egg, Theatre Royal Bath

“The pupils responded fantastically to the activities and exercises that Olly and Caroline led them in. In some cases, I saw pupils who are often reluctant to perform in their weekly lessons reaching new levels of confidence and commitment as they explored the various characters and situations… From a teacher’s point of view Kilter were a brilliant choice; Olly and Caroline have a natural, firm but fair approach with the pupils and there was a great deal of laughter all day too. After what I saw over those sessions I have asked Kilter to come in and work with our Drama GCSE and Drama A-Level students next year. Their approach supports students whilst challenging them to go beyond their comfort zone and the work produced is creative, inventive and of a remarkably high standard.” Jemma Richards, Head of Drama, Hanham High, Bristol

“Caroline was professional, approachable and down to earth.  She understood the context and offered useful and relevant insight from the perspective of an actor and  director.  The positive feedback from our students was universal and we will be asking her to return next year…” Jeremy Routledge, Calling The Shots & UWE (University West of England, Bristol)
